Crab masala/Crab xacuti(Goan)

CRABs.....crabs😊♡.I love crabs...You need to have a lot of patience to  eat crabs. I love crabs  and  enjoy it in a relaxed manner. There are innumerable ways to savour  crabs meat and I certainly have immense patience to savour the crab meat as well as the masala😀

Ingredients :
6 big fresh Crabs( I bought stone crabs)
2 big Onions
3 med. fresh Tomatoes
4tbsp oil
Salt as per the taste
1/2tsp turmeric post
1/2tsp red chilli powder
1/2 tsp corriander powd
1 bay leaf
Handful of finely chopped corriander for garnishing

Masala to grind:-

1/2 fresh grated coconut
Berry size ball of Tamarind (extract pulp)
20 flakes fresh Garlic
1 inch ginger
2 tsp. Poppy Seeds (Khuskhus)
7 dry Kashmiri Chillies(deseeded)
6 tbsps. dry Coriander Seeds
1 tbsp. Cumin Seeds (Jeera)
1 tsp. Garam Masala pwd.
7-8 Peppercorns
1 inch Cinnamon Stick
5 Cloves
2 tsp. Fennel Seeds (Sauf)
1Green Cardamom
1 small flake Javitri (Mace)
A pinch of Nutmeg pwd.
1 tsp. Turmeric pwd.


Method :

 1) Clean & cut the crabs or get it done from the fishmonger.Wash the crabs & drain  out water well. Keep it aside .

2) Heat the frying pan/ tawa on med. heat.
Add a few drops of oil & dry roast each of the ingredients mentioned in masala to grind section separately till light brown & keep aside.  cool down completely.

3) Transfer all the roasted condiments & spices into a masala grinder/blender & grind to a smooth paste using a little water. Transfer to a bowl .
Rinse the grinder with water & reserve the masala water for further use.

4) Heat oil in a wide pan or a large wok
Add in  chopped onions  and bay leaf ..saute till light brown.

5) Then slide in the chopped tomatoes, saute & cook till the tomatoes are soft & mashed well.

6) Add turmeric powder..red chilli powder...corriander powder  keep sauting.
Now transfer the ground masala paste to the pan/wok, mix & saute well till you get a fragrant aroma of the cooked spices.

7) Next gently slide in the crabs & stir well with a spatula till it is coated well with the masala.

Add the reserved masala water & let it steam for 2 mins. Cover with the plate ...pour little water in it

Simmer for another 15 mins.

Adjust the spices  and curry consistency according to the taste.

Garnish with chopped coriander leaves.
Serve hot with plain rice.pulavs rice, breads .enjoy😊
